Carnivale, Venezia #1, watercolor on board
I started this painting in May of 2002, after visiting Venice for Carnivale the previous February. At the time I planned to do a whole series based on Carnivale, which was one of the most incredible experiences to see. The atmosphere of that city combined with the costumes can create an amazing and surreal environment, as if you are on another planet, or have stepped into another time. (Assuming you can use your imagination a little and ignore the thousands of tourists who don't dress up - although I confess, I was one of them) Anyway, this painting, along with the whole project, kept getting pushed off to the side and it itook me 3 years to finally get back to it and finish it. Hopefully it means I will get a few more Carnivale paintings finished in the near future as well. I was deliberately trying not to just make paintings of people in costumes, and instead make paintings that hinted at some kind of story. Hopefully that works out throughout the series as it continues to develop.
